Have you ever heard of a tromba marina? No? How about a santouri? No? A nyckelharpa? Well, you probably have heard of that one if you're Swedish..
The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments put on a pretty amazing performance at Grinton church for the Swaledale Festival. A stage absolutely packed full of things that looked like they might possibly be musical instruments, or maybe items of furniture, as well as a chap with that most ancient and strange of instruments, a Mac Book Pro.
Monologues on the nature of music, from poet Francis Bacon, coupled with beautiful and haunting music from all the performers made for an unforgettable show.
Performing were Jon Banks, Jean Kelly, Alison McGillivray, Clare Salaman, Jon Nicholls, and Terence Wilton narrating.
